Causes of Lower Back Pain in Men
Do men suffer lower back pain more than women? Genetically, men are usually taller, heftier, sturdier and physically stronger than women, but yes, many men are more prone to suffer lower back pain than women because of the following reasons
1.Structural Injury to the Lumbar Vertebrae and Surrounding Muscles and Nerves
The lumbar spine is the supporting framework of the lower back, which consists of five lumbar vertebrae stacked on top of each other. These five vertebrae encase the spinal cord and spinal nerves emanate from them. Any injury or condition affecting the lumbar spine (including the muscles that support it) can cause low back pain.
Muscle spasms, sprains, strains and spinal fractures (as a result of repetitive movement, over exertion and injury) are common causes of low back pain in men.

The degeneration of the intervertebral disc produces exquisite pain at the lower back. When the disc degenerates, it can slip out of alignment (slipped disc or herniated disc). Consequently, it pinches the nerve root and you’ll feel an aching back.
Osteoarthritis (due to aging) and osteoporosis (due to a deficiency of calcium) are other causes of lower back pain in men. Rheumatoid arthritis and scoliosis can effect it also.
Another cause is spinal degeneration or degenerative disc disease (also termed as spondylosis). Also, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spine) can damage the sciatic nerve resulting in low back pain.
In addition to these causes, infections of the spine involving the lumbar vertebrae (such as osteomyelitis & Paget’s disease), and infections of the spinal joints can cause pain in the lower back. Also, spinal cord tumors can cause low back pain when the lumbar vertebrae are affected
2.Systemic Diseases That Affect the Neuromuscular System
Fibromyalgia is a common disorder that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain. Multiple myeloma (cancer of plasma cells) can cause bone pain at the lower back.

The kidneys are two important organs located in your back. Conditions involving the kidneys can cause low back pain in men such as kidney stones or kidney infections. Kidney stones are more common in men than in women.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm occurs five times more in men and is a serious cause of lower back pain. When the abdominal aorta – a large artery that runs adjacent to the lumbar spine – weakens, it bulges, forming an aneurysm. The aneurysm can rupture and acute lower back pain may occur.
If prostate cancer has spread to the spine, it also produces low back pain. The cancer can metastasize to the surrounding muscle, ligaments and tendons and aggravate the pain
4. Sedentary Habits
Some neurologists say that men with sedentary lifestyles are more likely to experience low back pain. Pain in the lower back is common among desk bound executives, computer operators, and travelers (who spend most of their time sitting).
The causes of lower back pain in men can range from simple causes to fatal conditions. If you’re a guy, you may want to visit your neurologist or orthopedic surgeon for a check-up
